About the Portman Group

The Portman Group is the responsibility body for drinks producers in the UK.  

Our role is to:

  • Lead on best practice in alcohol social responsibility through the actions of member companies.
  • Regulate the promotion and packaging of alcoholic drinks sold or marketed in the UK through our Codes of Practice.
  • Challenge and encourage the industry to market its products responsibly.

Purpose of Job:

To provide accurate and prompt written and telephone advice to alcohol producers and their agencies on the naming, packaging and promotion of alcohol drinks sold in the UK. To raise standards of responsibility in the industry by delivering training and to develop materials to assist the industry in understanding the Codes. To provide administrative support for the Portman Group Codes’ complaints process (Formal and Informal); ensuring that all documentation and information is correctly processed in line with the strict process requirements of the Codes.

Reporting to:

Head of Regulatory Affairs (HRA)

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Support the HRA in responding accurately and promptly to telephone and written requests for advice from producers and their agencies;
  • To raise standards of responsibility in the industry by undertaking proactive trademark searches of newly registered products and providing unsolicited advice where necessary;
  • To raise standards of responsibility in the industry by:
    • Delivering training and briefing sessions on the Code(s) and on alcohol social responsibility more generally.
    • Developing materials to assist the industry in understanding the Code(s) and embedding alcohol responsibility within their businesses.
  • To create an interactive training microsite, including training materials and update them following candidate feedback
  • To update relevant Code sections of the PG website
  • To maintain and update the Portman Group Marketing Accreditation membership to ensure it remains relevant. 
  • Support the HRA in providing administrative support to the Secretary to the Independent Complaints Panel (Panel), by effectively and efficiently processing complaints to include:
    • Acknowledging and logging complaints (Formal and Informal)
    • Producing and distributing correspondence to complaints parties within the timescales specified in the Code
  • To keep abreast of developments in alcohol marketing in order to anticipate potentially harmful trends which are not currently catered for by the Codes.
  • To keep abreast of decisions made by the Independent Complaints Panel.
  • To support the Regulation team by:
    • Assisting with the organisation and smooth running of annual Code Signatories’ Forum
    • Assisting with the recruitment of new Code Signatories and keep related information up-to-date;
    • Providing project support as required
  • To be flexibly deployed on any other work as required by the Director or Chief Executive, taking into account the needs of a small organisation.

Skills, knowledge and experience:

  1. Experience of marketing activity under a regulatory code, either as a regulator or within a regulated industry is desirable;

  1. Ability to make sound and consistent judgements on issues of responsible marketing;

  1. Excellent written and oral communications skills to convey these judgements, with the ability to write clearly, accurately, concisely and appropriately to all correspondents;

  1. A persuasive, authoritative manner with the ability to remain calm yet resolute in the face of pressure;

  1. Excellent administrative skills and high standards of personal organisation;

  1. Ability to deliver presentations to representatives of the industry at all levels;

  1. Proven experience in successful planning and management of a heavy workload within a framework of timescales;

  1. Ability to identify emerging marketing issues and challenges, and to propose appropriate actions to address these;

  1. Competence in use of PC, including Word, Outlook and PowerPoint;

  1. Knowledge of the drinks industry and of policies and practices concerned with the social aspects of alcohol would be an advantage;

  1. Ability to work on own initiative and be self-motivated as well as enthusiasm for being a team player in a very small organisation with a big mission.

  • Salary c.£35-37k
