Portman Group responds to new NHS alcohol data sets

05/02/2019

Commenting on the publication of new statistics from NHS Digital around alcohol death rates and hospital admissions, John Timothy Chief Executive of the Portman Group, said:

“These figures once again show us that the vast majority of people in England are drinking at or within very low risk levels. This is positive trend and one that demonstrates increased awareness of the benefits of moderation and responsible drinking.  Just 4% of people are higher risk drinkers – and it’s amongst this group that we need to target our efforts to reduce harm.

“The data also highlights once again the link between deprivation and alcohol harm with the poorest suffering most despite drinking the least. This is because, in many cases, excessive alcohol consumption is simply one of a range of factors contributing to ill health. If we are to tackle this we need targeted and effective local partnerships between councils, police, health services, local businesses and the voluntary sector to reduce harm where it is most prevalent.”
